Tadpole Music is pleased to be able to offer this privately made album of classic cathedral treble solos performed by Richard Birchall, ex-Head Chorister of the Queen's own choir at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. This CD was recorded in St. George's Chapel on the 9th of April, and 27th and 28th October 1997.

Richard Birchall became a chorister at St. George's Chapel in Windsor in 1992 at the age of eight. He was appointed Head Chorister in 1996. During his time at Windsor he sang many solos in services, concerts and broadcasts and performed on several occasions in the presence of the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

Richard left St. George's in 1997, having won both academic and music scholarships to Winchester College. At Winchester Richard was a regular performer, notably in Elgar's Cello Concerto and Kodaly's Sonata for solo cello op. 8. Since his arrival at Cambridge University he has given recitals at various colleges and performed concertos by Brahms, Haydn and Saint-Saens; as winner of the CUMS Concerto Competition 2004 he performed Dvorak's Cello Concerto with CUMS 1 at West Road Concert Hall, and gave a second performance in King's College Chapel as part of a special CUMS concert in aid of the Tsunami Appeal. Future projects include the Elgar concerto in Cambridge and at St. John's, Smith Square in March 2006. Richard is the 2005 winner of the prestigious Muriel Taylor Scholarship for a postgraduate cellist studying in the UK, and is the recipient of a major award from the Musicians' Benevolent Fund. Richard is in his final year reading Music at Pembroke College, where he holds an Instrumental Award; after leaving Cambridge he will continue to study the cello with Louise Hopkins, at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

At present Richard is a cellist and counter-tenor in the 'Vista Musicale' ensemble.
